Elizabeth Carne of Chapel Street

£7.50

Written by Dr Melissa Hardie, the founder of The Hypatia Trust, this book describes the life of a remarkable woman.

Elizabeth Carne (1817–1873) was born in Hayle, Cornwall the fifth daughter of Joseph Carne, F.R.S. The family subsequently moved to Chapel Street, Penzance, Cornwall, where her father was a partner in a bank.

Elizabeth became an author, natural philosopher, geologist, conchologist and mineral collector. After her father's death in 1858, she was put in charge of the bank and ran it until her death.

As a philanthropist she spent considerable sums on charitable purposes, founding several schools in Penzance and the surrounding area. She inherited her father's love of geology and she built a museum in which to exhibit to the public a fine family collection of minerals,

An author of several books she also wrote several papers in the Transactions of the Royal Geological Society of Cornwall and contributed articles to the London Quarterly Review.

This work is a fascinating lens on history and easy to see why the author draws comparisons with Hypatia of Alexandria, another exceptional woman scientist.
