Sue Hill - Theatre-maker, gardener, writer, storyteller, mayven, maker of giants/goddesses/creatures out of mud, sticks and plants, Cornishwoman

This month we celebrate Sue Hill. Sue has travelled the world, making theatre in unlikely places with Kneehigh and WildWorks, from the Green Line in Nicosia to Kensington Palace, via Soweto and Scilly. With her brother, Pete Hill, she has made many large scale earth/plant sculptures including the Mudmaid and Giant at Heligan, Ardhi in the Rift Valley in Kenya, Thousand-Mile-Eye in Hong Kong and  Eve at Eden. She was Artistic Director of the Eden Project for seven years. She is currently working on new Eden Projects planned for Dundee, Morecambe and Qingdao and researching the extraordinary adventures of Clara Vyvyan. She is an Honorary Fellow of Falmouth University, a Bard of the Cornish Gorsedh (bardic name Gwriores a Gewri, ‘Maker of Giants’), Chair of her local Allotment Society and a Trustee of the Gardeners’ House project in Penzance. Her hometown is Redruth.

Have you ever wished you could knit, sew, embroider, quilt, darn or learn any of those practical crafts that others seem able to do? We gather highly skilled crafters who love to share their skills with keen learners.

Join us for The Craft Exchange. If you’ve not joined a session before please reach out to Maggi Livingstone, via maggi@hypatia-trust.org.uk, to book your place - either as an expert crafter or new skill learner.

The session runs from 1.30pm - 3pm, and will continue every 3rd Wednesday of the month.

Change Through Art

An Exhibition of work from local campaign groups

Wednesday 11th - Wednesday 18th December,

11am-5pm

The Hypatia Trust, Chapel Street

In the South West of Cornwall there is a long tradition of the women in the local area using their creative skills to raise awareness of manmade events which are having a negative effect on the lives of the community both here and further afield.

This month, at Hypatia HQ, we will be exhibiting samples of work from local campaign groups who are hoping to or who have begun to bring about change.

For example, Sustainable Penzance, who aim to encourage the local community to get out into the green spaces in and around Penzance, have produced a beautifully detailed user friendly map of all the green spaces which can be walked in Penzance.

There will also be some examples of the need for change which involve raising awareness and encouraging others to get involved.

This exhibition is designed to be inspirational for others to bring their creativity to important topics, encouraging positive and thoughtful action.
