ELIZABETH CARNE: BANKER, GEOLOGIST, PAINTER, PHILANTHROPIST – A TALK BY MAGGI LIVINGSTONE (ARCHIVIST @ THE HYPATIA TRUST)

5th June @ 6:15pm - 7:30pm | £6

Hear about the remarkable Cornishwoman Elizabeth Carne, born in Hayle, who managed to study, to research in the scientific field of the time, to write and to run a bank while living on Chapel Street in Penzance.

‘Though well known in her lifetime’ writes Dr M. Hardie in her biographical notes, ‘she has dropped from sight in the welter of names of famed men of science that fill our Cornish history shelves.’

Talk given by Maggi Livingstone at the Hayle Hertiage Centre, as part of the Hayle HerStories Exhibition.

We are supporting the Hayle Heritage Centre celebrating women in Cornwall. Hayle HerStory specifically looks at the fascinating lives of the women of Hayle. Their stories have largely been forgotten, providing an alternative lens through which to view the history of the town. Alongside the exhibition is a programme of workshops, talks, and events.

The biography by Melissa Hardie-Budden is on sale at the event, and from our online bookshop.

Finally Elizabeth Carne’s book “British Shells” is on display in the exhibition, on loan from Morrab Library.
