In 2025 The Hypatia Trust piloted a new series of artist residencies called ‘Who Makes History’. With this current request for funding, we seek support to continue and grow this project by offering one more residency in 2026. The 'Who Makes History?' project is an intentional, intercultural, intergenerational coming together of The Hypatia Trust's staff, volunteers, community with queer, working class, black, and global majority artists and academics from around Cornwall, the UK, and the world in order to support deep reflection on, and creative expression of Cornwall's rich cultural history and deep connection to the world.

Residents will be invited to explore the Trust's archive and collections, and the landscape and stories and communities of West Penwith. As we generate new stories from our archives, and create new artifacts to exhibit and share, our aim is to engage a much wider and more diverse network of women artists and academics from Cornwall and beyond. The result will be the development of new creative works that will then be featured in an exhibition at our space on Chapel Street at The Hypatia Trust in Penzance, Cornwall.

These residencies will be focused on providing space and time for queer and/or working class and/or black artists and academics, and/or artists and academics from global majority communities, to complete work that both contributes to their overall body of work and connects to the work of The Hypatia Trust which is to curate, share and amplify the voices and work of women.

Each residency will include local, Cornish artists and academics, working in deliberate collaboration with artists and academics from elsewhere in the and the world.
