featuring Penny Florence and Sarah Tremlett
Penny will show some very short film-poems that move between what she sees as the impossible gap between word and image; that’s always where she seems to find herself, and why she moves between media. She’s looking for new ways of expressing those things that open onto the apparently inexpressible, and she loves how digital media continue to open onto potential innovation. This is why she never knows what form her next piece will take, until it declares itself, and why the joke structure is never far away from what she does: it’s how we get to what we can’t think, let alone say.
Screening two art-based family history poetry films, Sarah will discuss how ekphrastic poetry films facilitate new narrative approaches (interweaving three sources: painting, poem and film). And how a ‘co-existence of perspectives’ can be in play, while expanding otherwise dull ancestral research. She will also read from Horse-Woman – her volatile poetic memoir inspired by early paintings about recording her life living in a London bedsit whilst painting and modelling. She discusses how revisiting your own artwork can help shed light on past unspoken trauma still held in the body.
Penny Florence has published eight books and (she says) far too many articles. She is a member of the NSA (Newlyn Society of Artists) and Professor Emerita at The Slade School of Fine Art, UCL She has held chairs in three University departments, despite being a reluctant academic. But she says The Slade was great!
Sarah Tremlett MPhil, FRSA, SWIP is director of Liberated Words online and Board Member of Bristol Poetry Institute. Her films have won international prizes and her book The Poetics of Poetry Film is the "ground breaking encyclopaedic industry bible".
