“Basically, I have been compelled by curiosity.” — Mary Leakey

Congratulations to
Daisy Culmer -
Curator and Artist

What motivates you to do what you do?

Passion and a deep connection with the place I’m from. This is true of both my art practice and my curatorial work. My art explores the concept of “home” (which, for me, is so deeply entrenched in the wilds of West Penwith) and so the imagery comes just as much from my heart as it does from observation.

And having gone to school in Hayle (and grown up in nearby St Erth) I’m committed to sharing its stories at the museum including its remarkable engineering accomplishments which, though small and geographically remote, saw the town achieve international renown in the 19th century.

I’m also motivated by the dedication and enthusiasm of my museum peers; it’s a sector full of such genuine excitement for what we do.

A Big Thank You

Thank you to everyone that participated and the people that came along to our International Women's Day celebrations on the 8th March! It was a fantastic day, and it was great to see it being celebrated more widely round the globe.

The date was also the 1st birthday for our Women in Word bookshop and so we wish to thank our wonderful volunteers and bookshop manager.

It’s fair to say the shop has been a success, as we’ve welcomed many curious visitors and sparked interesting conversations along the way.

We’re always looking for volunteers, if you can do one session a week or a month - it’s all super helpful. The shop is open Wednesday - Saturdays. Just email: bookshop@hypatia-trust.org.uk or pop in when we’re open to have a chat.

What's On @ Hypatia

We want to celebrate women writers and creatives, our Women in Word bookshop and our community. So, we have something very special for you on the 9th and 10th of June. Our very own Women in Word Festival.

It’s a two day literary event at The Hypatia Trust, Chapel St, Penzance, featuring a networking event, screenings of poetry films by women, an in conversation/readings from Penelope Shuttle and Karen Smith - plus a literary costume ball in The Union ballroom!

Full event details and booking open soon.

We are thrilled that after 5+ years of hard work and dedication, The Gardeners’ House has been awarded a full grant by National Lottery Heritage Fund to realise the project and secure its future.

The grant means the final piece of funding is in place, but it’s important to acknowledge the funders who have helped the project get this far, including The Architectural Heritage Fund, Penzance Council, Cornwall Council, Penzance Town Fund and of course ourselves, The Hypatia Trust.

This idea was the brainchild of our founder, Melissa Hardie-Budden MBE, and she would be absolutely over the moon at this achievement and so proud of the team.

Miki Ashton, Project Coordinator, said “It’s been an amazing journey so far and we are absolutely delighted that the funding from the NLHF will enable us to save an historic building and transform it into a sustainable green hub bringing our communities and partner organisations together to share in the natural heritage of West Cornwall."

Huge congratulations to all involved, and thank you!
