We are pleased to announce our first ever Women In Word Festival!

Taking place this June featuring a Heritage and Arts networking event, screenings of poetry films by women, an in conversation/readings from Karen Smith and Penelope Shuttle, plus a literary costume ball in The Union ballroom!

Friday 9th June

11am to 2pm

Women Talking: Networking Morning

Join us for an informal networking morning; a chance to meet other women working in the Heritage and Arts sectors in Cornwall and see our space on Chapel Street.

If you are working in the Heritage and Arts sectors in Cornwall and would like to attend please email: lally@hypatia-trust.org.uk to book your free place.

Screenings of short poetry films

Made by Cornwall connected female creatives with an introduction to the evening from co-curator Sarah Tremlett of Liberated Words.

Poetry & Conversation: Karen Smith & Penelope Shuttle

Our Women in Word Writer in Residence is Karen Smith, writer and librarian at National Poetry Library. Karen is joined by fellow poet Penelope Shuttle for an in-conversation plus Q&A along with the two poets readings from their work. Book now to be sure of a seat.

Literary Costume Ball at The Union ballroom

Our Women in Word festival ends with a fun celebration! Dress up as your favourite fictional character, or even pay homage to an entire genre. Whether you are Flaubert's parrot or The Girl on the Train it's all good – and don't worry.. if your costume is going for real life realness you can still come party.

Music from Nina the Salsa Queen. Vintage vinyl from Brazil, Cuba and the strange mysterious land of the Past… hot steps, cool vibes and a special women's voices selection for the night!

You do not want to miss this party. Ticket £10.

Margaret Chinn 1934 – 2023

We were so saddened to hear of the passing of Margaret Chinn in April.

Margaret was a great friend of The Hypatia Trust, and when the Women in Word bookshop launched just over a year ago, she kindly donated a huge number of wonderful books for us to curate and sell. Margaret was a teacher, painter, printmaker, etcher and rower. She trained at Coventry College of Art and Reading University before teaching art and crafts at various schools in Hertfordshire, London and Coventry.

After taking early retirement, she moved to West Penwith and began to devote herself entirely to her creative life. A skilled painter in oil, Margaret worked in multi-media to create lino prints, etchings, watercolours and collages. She exhibited extensively over the past twenty five years, always willing to work with others for charitable purposes and contributing to voluntary events.

We hold a Hypatia Collection of Women's Art, an archive donated by Margaret which is available to view by request.

Margaret was a close friend of Melissa's and the Trustees and we send our love and respects to her family.

During the past few weeks Hypatia has been fortunate to receive two large collections for its future work with the Gardener’s House Project. We would like to say a big thank you to the families who have given these books and paintings as a commemoration for the two people named here:

Sally Poynton, 1976 2021

Sally worked as a holistic therapist and was part of ‘Cornwall Women in Business Network’. She was also a keen Environmental activist and this remarkable collection covers a wide range of subjects within the ‘Natural World’. Sally pursued this passion by studying at Exeter University and was awarded a ’Diploma of Higher Education in Evolutionary Biology’, posthumously in 2021.

Catharine English, 1944 – 2020. Botanical Painter, artist, poet 

Guy English, Catharine’s husband has not only donated a number of books, on Botany but also a large proportion of Catharine’s legacy of paintings and drawings, all relating to flowers and plants completed in a variety of media. They are unique and beautiful with Catharine’ style of wit shining through in so many of her pieces.

Both these collections will prove to be an important archive for future research and will be available once The Gardeners’ House is open.  

Do you have an interest in women’s history, computer skills, and an eye for detail?  

We're building a small team of volunteer editors to help manage our Women in Cornwall history hub (womenincornwall.org), dedicated to women’s lives and works in Cornwall through time. At present the website lists over 600 women and more than 1000 of their unique works.

As we add ways for people to contribute their own research, we need some sharp-eyed editors to catch typos, help people with their queries, and check that the new information being added is relevant and appropriate for the website.

You don’t have to be an expert – enthusiasm is all we need!
