New Appointment: Katie Kirk

We are delighted to welcome Katie Kirk as our new Chair on the board of Trustees. Katie’s relationship to Melissa and her involvement with The Hypatia Trust go some way back and we are thrilled to have her on board as we carry forward Melissa’s legacy.

Katie says: “I am honoured to be asked to join the Board of Trustees at The Hypatia Trust having witnessed the organisation blossom steadily over many years. I am looking forward to our journey of co-discovery in this new chapter for The Hypatia Trust.”

Poetry & Conversation on
Dying, Death and Grief

Join Rosie Hadden and Rebecca Althaus for poetry and conversation.

Rebecca will read from her work in progress ‘Burying Your Body’; a collection of poetry about the death of her partner. It’ll be followed by conversation and a Q&A between Rosie, Rebecca and the audience.

Rebecca Althaus (www.rebeccaalthaus.co.uk) is a poet and a research student at Falmouth University. Her poetry has appeared in The North, Tears in the Fence and Raceme, and was highly commended in The Poetry Business 2021 International Book & Pamphlet Competition. Her poetry Hilm ‘After Laying Out Your Body’ was screened at The Hypatia Trust’s Women in Word Festival 2023.

Rosie Hadden is a poet, an End of Life Doula, an artist and a weaver of cloth and poetry. She won Teignmouth Open Comp in 2022, was shortlisted in The Rialto Nature and Place Comp 2023. Her work has appeared in Ink Sweat and Tears, Borrowed Time on death dying and change, 26 Voices for Change, Prompted to Write and other anthologies. She is current Chair of Falmouth Poetry Group.

Elizabeth Carne

Come and hear about a remarkable Cornish woman Elizabeth Carne who managed to study, research in the scientific field of the time, write and run a bank amongst other things while living in Chapel Street in Penzance.

“Though well known in her lifetime;’ writes Melissa Hardie in her biographical notes; ‘she has dropped from sight in the welter of names of famed men of science that fill our Cornish history shelves.”

Do come and join us to explore her life further. A biography of Elizabeth, written by Melissa, is available to purchase anytime at our Women in Word bookshop.

Bringing more access and inclusion to the arts and culture in our community. 

We join the Pay It Forward movement so more people can experience our events.

Like many other small charities we rely on ticket sales to pay for running costs but we know that for some people entry costs can be prohibitive; stopping wider participation and enjoyment.

The amount donators pay will be put towards giving free tickets to those who might not otherwise be able to attend;

• Donators can pay into the Pay It Forward function at any time

• There is no need to specify a particular event

The aim is to be able to have enough in the fund to be able to release a number of free tickets per event.
