A search for Marlow Moss along the coasts of Cornwall, Holland and France

Marlow Moss (Kilburn, 1889 – Penzance 1958) was a constructivist artist who lived and worked in England, France and the Netherlands, often close to the sea. During several decades she lived in Lamorna, near Penzance. What was she looking for in Lamorna, and what exactly did she find there? |

It is remarkable that Moss was better known in the Netherlands and France than in England. For example, she never found an entrance in the St. Ives modern art scene. Can we find out why that was? |

Florette Dijkstra (The Hague, 1963) is a Dutch writer and artist. In 1994 she published Marlow Moss + het reconstuctieproject, which was published in English by the Patten Press in 1997. At the same time, an exhibition on Moss was on display at Tate St. Ives, featuring Dijkstra’s reconstruction project. She is currently working on a book about her searches for Marlow Moss, undertaken between 1991 and the present day. |

Dying, Death and Grief

Thursday 5th October | 6.30pm | Hypatia HQ | £5 Join Rosie Hadden and Rebecca Althaus for poetry and conversation about dying, death and grief. Rebecca will read from her work in progress ‘Burying Your Body’; a collection of poetry about the death of her partner. It’ll be followed by conversation and a Q&A between Rosie, Rebecca and the audience. Rebecca Althaus (www.rebeccaalthaus.co.uk) is a poet and a research student at Falmouth University. Her poetry has appeared in The North, Tears in the Fence and Raceme, and was highly commended in The Poetry Business 2021 International Book & Pamphlet Competition. Her poetry Hilm ‘After Laying Out Your Body’ was screened at The Hypatia Trust’s Women in Word Festival 2023.

Rosie Hadden is a poet, an End of Life Doula, an artist and a weaver of cloth and poetry. She won Teignmouth Open Comp in 2022, was shortlisted in The Rialto Nature and Place Comp 2023. Her work has appeared in Ink Sweat and Tears, Borrowed Time on death dying and change, 26 Voices for Change, Prompted to Write and other anthologies. She is current Chair of Falmouth Poetry Group.

We will create monstrous characters, conjure up spooky settings, evoke atmosphere through descriptive writing, visit horror tropes such as the haunted house and the isolated moorland. Come prepared to splurge your deepest fears and grotesque thoughts onto the page… |

No previous experience required. Bring a pen, notebook and your wicked imagination! This workshop will involve some subjects that may cause offence. It’s the horror genre, after all. If you are of a sensitive disposition this may not be the workshop for you. 18+ only. |

Our friends at Newlyn Art Gallery & The Exchange are hosting the The Art of Making exhibition (until 28th October). Bringing together the joy of the handcrafted, celebrating and championing creativity from established and emerging makers, crafts people, and designers. Inspired by the exhibition are 2 workshops for your diary; RITUAL WAX MODELLING JEWELLERY WORKSHOP with Aquila Dunford Wood of Ritual Studio. Ritual Studio is offering bespoke jewellery making workshops as part of the exhibition. MAKING WATERCOLOURS FROM SOIL AND STONE with Tegen Tossell. Tegan is a Cornwall based artist and her workshop explores materiality and making in connection with our natural environment.
