When Katrina’s father died suddenly in 2012 and she couldn’t find a non-traditional funeral director, she decided to arrange his funeral. It was challenging but surprisingly fulfilling and identified a hole in the market. In 2014 The Cornish Funeral Company was born – a green and alternative funeral company that covers the whole of Cornwall and sometimes beyond. They won the Green Funeral Director Award 2022 as well as a being Highly Commended at the Cornwall Sustainability Awards 2021.

What do you consider your greatest achievement?

Professionally – Having the nerve to start The Cornish Funeral Company - a new, green disruptor business in an area that was male-dominated, is naturally challenging, potentially off-putting and in which we had absolutely no experience.

Personally – I consider my greatest achievement to have brought up our two wonderful children under sometimes challenging health and financial circumstances and helping them to launch into the world as happy and confident adults.

We’ve had a fabulous response to our new podcast, Women in Sound, launched last week with the first episode, Women in Dance. It’s available to listen now on Spotify and Apple platforms.

The next episode, Women in Food, is dropping this month.

This is a popular talk by 5 artists about their journey on a year-long shared “Artists Book” project. Little did they realise when they were starting out that they were running headlong into a pandemic that would change lives.

This team of artists each created a book or books and chose a different and personal theme for the content. Every 6 to 8 weeks each artist would complete a contribution whilst keeping to the originator’s choice of subject and pass the book on to the next artist in sequence.

Hear about the overwhelming response to their work and the process they went through, during unprecedented times.

Do you have a crafting skill that you would be willing to share?

Do you knit, sew, embroider, crochet, rug hook, or quilt by hand or with a machine? We would like to encourage these important skills and ensure that they are passed on to as many people as possible.
