Sing on! Song weavers!

‘This account of women in Cornish music is ambitious and far-reaching, emerging from the community and bringing much-needed light to the women song-weavers, tune carriers, performers, composers, teachers and directors of Cornwall.’— Dr Kate Neale

For the first time, a snapshot of the women behind Cornwall’s buzzing musical industry has been captured through the passions and personal experiences of a team of dedicated researchers. This anthology has something for everyone, with the stories uncovered ranging from sopranos of the Eighteenth Century to the ‘Punk Rebel Great-Granny’ Viva Hamnell, taking in comprehensive studies of female brass band players and organists along the way. You’ll also find explorations of the experiences of Cornish musicians abroad, following women’s stories to Australia, America and beyond, along with oral histories from some of our contemporary female musicians and stories of family musicianship from the research team.

The anthology has been created as part of the Hypatia Trust’s project Women of Cornish Music: Past and Present, which has been made possible through support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and the Cornwall Heritage Trust.
